Vintage Love: Lana Del Rey and 60s Style

Can we talk about Lana Del Rey for a bit? I know that she's blown up since her album came out and lots of people have taken to making fun of her, but I'm going to put my head on the line here and tell you guys that I totally love her. I mean how brilliantly has she worked the Hollywood shallowness? This is a girl who released an album as herself and under it's somewhat disappointing numbers reinvented herself and released almost the exact same album! It's a completely sad testament to how we view beauty and talent that Lana Del Rey had to become Lana Del Rey, but I think it's very interesting.

Anyway, aside from enjoying her slow and sultry music, I am a huge fan of the Lana Del Rey style. She's just got this fashion sense that's so reminiscent of 60s bombshells and is as sultry as her music. Lana Del Rey's style is obviously inspired by and a call back to some of those iconic sultry women on the 60s (and some of my favorite style icons) like Brigitte Bardot and Catherine Deneuve.

It's no secret that I love vintage - vintage style, vintage decor, vintage graphics, vintage anything - so it can't be surprising that I adore her style. The 60s have quickly become one of my favorite eras in history for style which is convenient because 60s style is all the rage this spring. I want to start wearing capris and wide headbands for the rest of the season. If you want to tap into some of that 60s bombshell style, I suggest tossing in some touches of leopard print. Then again, leopard print is my answer to everything. Oh super secret thrifting tip? You can find some awesome pairs of capris from Banana Republic and J. Crew if you shop around Goodwills and Salvation Armies in more upscale (read: rich) neighborhoods. I've hit gold there before. You don't have to pick up vintage pieces to pull off vintage style. Trend Forcasting - 3 Trends You Need to Be On Top Of

Working at a job that requires me to be online all day is sometimes both a blessing and a curse. Curse more often than not, but surfing through blogs all day can be beneficial in the sense that I can see what people are talking about. And, of course, add to my ever-growing wish list. Here's what I've picked up lately.

Cosmic:

On everything from shoes to nails to make up the galaxy seems to be on everyone's mind and I have to say I'm loving it! Cosmic prints have been popping up on clothing for a while now, but lately I've been seeing it expand to everything. Cosmic nail art is also huge and if I painted my nails more often (or was any good at doing my nails) I'd jump on that band wagon too. Cosmic prints in fashion is something I'm constantly adding to my wish list, but sometimes it's hard to do a cosmic print without looking too wizzard-y. Cosmic print leggings are one way. I've had my eye on these galaxy print leggings for some time now.

Oh these shoes. I saw these cosmic wedges over the summer and have been drooling over then ever since. Too bad they're sold out because I would not even blink before ordering hand painted galaxy wedges.

Egyptian:

Egyptian style, Egyptian inspired fashion, and Egyptian themed I have been spotting with my keen little eye all over the interwebs. Specifically in jewelry, I've been going ga ga over Egyptian inspired necklaces.

The 60s:

If the runways shows for the Spring ready-to-wear collections showed me anything it's that the obsession with the 70s is over and we've reverted to a 60s style that is completely classic with a touch of bohemian. A little more Mod and a little less Madmen.

So there it is, you know what I'll be strutting my stuff in come this Spring. A tip? No matter how "in" the 60s are, stay away from go-go boots. That's just something that needs to stay dead.

Tuesday Trendspotting: 50s and 60s Never Die

I know, I know, you've barely started working on that tan and here I am talking about Fall/Winter 2012. Well I'm sorry, I know it's hard to accept but Fashion does not wait! So neither do I. Ok well, I do. As in, I wait to buy but not to look. So check it out. 2012 is bringing back the beehive! I talked about before how that sweet picnic in the park 60s style was coming back for the spring (I failed at making it the theme of my spring wardrobe unfortunately) and it did in a big way, but it seems that the beehive, cat-eyes, pencil skirts, and capris and in it to win it. The retro craze may have started with MadMen, but it's taken on another life now and I couldn't be happier! I mean I always saw myself as a greaser's girlfriend at some point in my life. That point should be now.

The Fall/Winter 2012 collection from Dsquared2 borrows heavily from that punky, Rebel Without a Cause attitude while combining it with some very classic pieces of the 50s housewife. A little tough and a little sweet, my favorite combination. Obviously, I want every single piece in this collection.

VINTAGE and NOW

My insanely fashionable and wonderful fashion school friend dropped this bomb of knowledge on me one day: "Fashion moves like a pedulum." WHOA. Is your mind blown?

It's pretty common knowledge that fashion trends recycle over time. The 70s were back in full swing last Spring and this Spring I'm seeing 60s inspired cuts across designers. It can be a damaging thing to realize if you're a pack rat like me, because I hold on to clothes I love FOREVER. Why? Because you never know when it'll come back in style. A concept my ::ahem:: roommate consistently fails to understand. EX:
"Get rid of that vest, you never wear vests"
"I don't wear it NOW, because I'm not going for the tailored thing right NOW"
::blank stare:: "Well, you could just buy a new one when you decide to use it in your wardrobe again"
"Why would I buy a new one when I have a perfectly good one right here? This is a staple. I don't use it all the time, but it needs to live in my closet for when it becomes necessary again"
"That makes no sense"
"YOU make no sense!"

And that's how I successfully conduct an argument. And this ends my tirade.

In the spirit of this idea, I've decided to try something new on the blog called VINTAGE and NOW. It's sort of self-explanatory, but I always browse these runway shows and think "that's so (insert era here)". Now I'm going to catalog it. By the way, this would be a fun idea for all you vintage queens out there who still love being on the cusp of trends.

I know that the runways are showing pre-fall right now (nuts right?), but my brain can't possibly think that far ahead in the middle of winter. Spring is as far as I'm will to go. Besides, I figure that gives you plenty of time to stock your closet full of 60s favorites or pull yours out of storage. Right? Right.

Tuesday Trendspotting: House of Harlow and Winter Kate Fall 2012

Ok, that's it. It's August, the summer shorts and tank tops are being put on sale. You can now buy your bathing suits for next year for less than half the price. It's time to talk fall. I'm working on developing an idea of what I want my wardrobe to look like this year. I work in an office, a regular nine-to-five, but it's a really relaxed atmosphere so I don't really need lots of tailored tweed, but I do still need to look profesional. Somehow, magically, House of Harlow and Winter Kate have managed to put together a collection of fall looks that are fun, playful, and classy. I think I found my ideal wardrobe. via Fabsugar

Vintage Love: Take Me Back in Time

I was honestly in a rut trying to come up with something to post today and I kind of hate admitting that. My thoughts on blogging go like this: You should love what you're doing and do it because you enjoy it. Therefore, if I'm in a rut or desperately searching for something to write about, I skip a day. Not that anyone notices anyway, but I'd rather let my blog sit empty for a day than force myself to write something I don't care about. I hope you guys appreciate that too, because, trust me, my writing just gets worst and worst the less I care about a topic.

Well, anyway, sometimes an idea strikes me out of no where and I just have to get it out there. I realized that as an Etsy seller, I don't talk about the store or my love of vintage as much as I maybe should. So what I did was throw together this treasury of some vintage items I found that make me smile! This one is spring themed because it's so nice out today all I can think about doing is going on a picnic with that vintage picnic basket I picked up years ago and have only used once. Geez, I really am a hoarder aren't I? Anyways, treasuries are fun to put together and you can actually shop what's in them! Enjoy!

Thursday Obsession

A while ago I started paying attention to the lovely and very talented designer Erin Fetherston, who always has just the chicest and most feminine style. Of course, everyone is talking about her Spring 2012 collection and I have to join in because I want every single piece in my closet.

The Spring collection is etherally dreamy with a punch of 60s Twiggy that can't be ignored. And if I were a twig I would wear every single piece from this collection. Here are some of my faves:

Does this model not look like Twiggy herself? That's obviously why my mind went there, but I think the collection is also very 60s inspired. I love the flowy fabrics and bold splashes of color, even though the collection is mostly pastel you still find hot pinks and vibrant reds.

So, I'll continue daydreaming that I have a million dollars to spend on a whole new Spring wardrobe while you take a peek into Erin Fetherston's actual million dollar (or more!) wardrobe:
